Life can be overwhelming sometimes — emotionally, mentally, and even physically. We carry so much inside, and we rarely have time to pause, breathe, and process how we really feel.

That’s where counselling and mindfulness meditation come in — two powerful approaches that can gently support your emotional wellbeing and help you reconnect with yourself in a more grounded way.

What Is Person-Centred Counselling?

Person-centred counselling is based on the belief that you already have the inner resources to heal — you just need a safe, non-judgemental space to explore what’s going on for you.

There’s no advice-giving or fixing. Instead, you’re met with empathy, acceptance, and space to talk freely. Over time, this allows you to reconnect with your inner clarity and strength.

What Is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the practice of noticing what’s happening in the present moment — your thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations — without judgement.

It doesn’t mean “clearing your mind.” It means being kind to yourself in the middle of everything you’re feeling. And that kindness is often the first step toward healing.

Why They Work So Well Together

Counselling helps you explore and understand your inner world. Mindfulness helps you stay present with it. Together, they support:

Greater self-awareness

Emotional regulation and calm

Stress relief and clarity

A deeper connection to your own needs and values

It’s like building a stronger foundation — emotionally and mentally — so you can move through life with more steadiness.

A Gentle Invitation

If you’re feeling disconnected, overwhelmed, or just curious about where to start, you’re welcome to reach out. Whether through person-centred counselling, meditation, or a blend of both, we can find a way forward that feels right for you.

Small steps can lead to deep shifts — and healing doesn’t have to be rushed.

If you’ve ever found yourself lying awake at night, unable to switch off, you’re far from alone. Sleep difficulties affect millions, and they can take a real toll on our mood, energy, and overall wellbeing.

Luckily, counselling and meditation offer gentle, effective ways to support better sleep — helping you feel calmer, more balanced, and ready to rest.

Why Sleep Can Be So Elusive

Stress, anxiety, and unresolved emotions are common causes of sleepless nights. When your mind is busy or overwhelmed, it can be tricky to relax enough to drift off naturally.

That’s where counselling can help. Talking with a counsellor provides a safe space to explore what’s on your mind, reduce worries, and develop coping strategies that make a real difference.

How Counselling Supports Better Sleep

In counselling, you can uncover patterns or stresses that might be impacting your sleep — like anxiety about the future, difficult relationships, or unhelpful thinking habits. Through compassionate listening and personalised support, counselling helps you:

Understand and process difficult emotions

Develop healthier thinking patterns

Learn relaxation and self-care strategies

Build resilience to stress and worry

This emotional work often leads to calmer, more restful nights.

The Role of Meditation in Sleep

Meditation is a simple, accessible tool you can use anytime to calm your nervous system. Regular meditation practice can:

Reduce stress and anxiety levels

Slow racing thoughts

Promote relaxation in both body and mind

Improve sleep quality and duration

Even just 5-10 minutes a day, especially before bed, can make a difference.

Combining Counselling and Meditation

Together, counselling and meditation create a powerful one-two approach to better sleep. Counselling addresses the root emotional causes, while meditation provides practical tools for relaxation.

If you’re struggling with sleep, trying either or both might be exactly what you need to reclaim restful nights and brighter days.

Getting Started

If you’d like to explore how counselling or meditation could help you, please feel free to get in touch. I’m here to support you on your journey to better sleep and wellbeing.

I also offer a guided sleep meditation course designed to help you relax deeply and prepare your mind and body for restful, restorative sleep. Whether you’re new to meditation or looking for extra support, this course could be a gentle and effective tool on your path to better sleep.

When you’re thinking about starting counselling, it’s completely natural to feel unsure or even nervous about opening up. You might be wondering: What if I say something too personal? What if they judge me? Can I really trust that it stays between us?

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone—and you’re asking a really important question.

Your Privacy Matters

In person-centred counselling, one of the core principles is creating a safe, non-judgemental space where you can talk freely. Confidentiality is a big part of that safety. What you say in your sessions stays between you and your counsellor.

Counsellors follow a strict ethical code. That means we don’t share what you talk about with friends, family, employers—or anyone else. It’s your space, and you get to decide what you bring to it.

Are There Any Exceptions?

There are a few legal and ethical situations where a counsellor may need to break confidentiality. These are rare, but it’s important to be aware of them. They usually include:

If you share that you or someone else is at serious risk of harm

If there is disclosure of abuse involving a child or vulnerable adult

If we’re legally required to share information (for example, by a court order)

If anything like this ever comes up, you’d always be informed and involved in the process. It would never be done behind your back.

You’re in Control

Counselling isn’t about pushing you to say more than you want to. You set the pace. Some people open up quickly; others take time—and that’s completely okay. The relationship is built on trust, and that trust takes time to grow.

If you’re unsure, you can even start by talking about how hard it is to talk. That’s a perfectly valid and welcome place to begin.

Final Thoughts

Taking the step to start counselling is a brave and caring act towards yourself. And knowing your privacy is respected can help make that step feel a little less daunting.

If you ever want to ask about confidentiality—or anything else about how counselling works—please don’t hesitate to get in touch. You’re welcome to reach out, whether you’re ready to book a session or just want to explore if it’s right for you.

Not long ago, most therapy sessions happened face-to-face in an office. Then the pandemic came, and suddenly everyone was talking to their therapist through a phone. What started as a necessity has now become a really convenient option that’s here to stay.

But you might be wondering: Is telehealth right for me? Or should I stick with in-person therapy?

Here’s a guide to help you figure out what works best for your lifestyle, comfort level, and personal preferences.

What Is Telehealth Therapy?

Telehealth therapy (also called telephone counselling) is simply counselling done over the phone. You and your therapist meet at the same time you normally would—just from different locations.

Many clients love it because it allows them to access care without having to leave home or take extra time off work.

Pros of Telehealth Therapy

1. Convenience
No commute. No waiting rooms. Just answer the phone and go.
Perfect if you’re juggling a busy schedule, parenting duties, or work meetings.

2. Comfort
Some people feel more relaxed opening up from the comfort of their home.
You can wear cozy clothes, light a candle, or bring your dog—whatever helps you feel at ease.

3. Access
If you live in a rural area or have transportation limitations, telehealth can make therapy more accessible.

4. Continuity
Feeling a little under the weather? Travelling? Stuck at home during a snowstorm? You don’t have to miss your session.

When In-Person Might Be a Better Fit

1. You feel more connected in person
Some people just like being in the same room as their therapist. That’s valid! If the physical presence feels grounding, in-person might be the better choice.

2. You want fewer distractions
If you’re easily distracted at home—or if your space doesn’t feel private—coming into an office can create a clearer boundary for you to focus.

3. You’re dealing with tech issues
If internet problems or phone signal stress you out more than they help, in-person sessions may feel more seamless.

4. You’re working through something that feels really intense
While telehealth is effective for most concerns, some people feel more supported and contained when they’re physically with their therapist for deep or emotionally heavy work.

Still Not Sure? Try Both.

You don’t have to commit to one forever. Some clients do a mix of both, depending on the week. Others start with telehealth and switch to in-person later—or vice versa.

The best part? There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. You get to choose what feels right for you.

Ready to Start?

If you’re thinking about beginning therapy—or wondering whether to switch formats—let’s talk about it. I offer both in-person and telehealth sessions and am happy to help you figure out what fits your needs best.

Contact me here

Remember: Whether we’re sitting across from each other or connecting through a phone, the goal is the same—support, healing, and growth. You’re not alone on the journey.

Let’s be real: meditation sounds great in theory—but when you’re juggling work, kids, emails, and everything else, it can feel impossible to actually do it.

The good news? You don’t need an hour, a cushion, or a mountaintop. You just need a few smart tweaks to make meditation doable (and dare we say, enjoyable) in your real life.

Here are 6 simple ways to fit meditation into your day—no matter how packed your schedule is.

1. Stack it onto an existing habit

This is the “peanut butter and jelly” of meditation hacks. Already brush your teeth every morning? While you do it, take a minute to breathe deeply and focus on the sensation. Boom—mini meditation.

Pair your practice with:

Your morning coffee

Waiting for your computer to start up

Your skincare routine

If you already do this, you can add that.

2. Set a 1-minute timer and breathe

No lie—one minute is enough to start. Set a timer, close your eyes (or soften your gaze), and just breathe.

It’s short, it’s sweet, and it’s scientifically proven to help calm your nervous system. You don’t need more time—you just need to begin.

3. Use your commute as a cue

If you’re not driving, try a guided meditation on public transport. If you are driving, treat your commute as a mindfulness practice:

No phone

No podcast

Just presence

Notice your grip on the wheel, the rhythm of your breath, the scenery outside. Mindful driving? Yes please.

4. Turn waiting into meditating

Stuck in line? On hold? Waiting for your kid’s soccer practice to end?

These are golden opportunities to drop into the present moment. Instead of doom-scrolling, close your eyes (if you can) and check in with your breath. Waiting doesn’t have to feel like wasted time.

5. Bookend your day

Try a 2-minute meditation as soon as you wake up—or right before bed. It can be as simple as:

Noticing your breath

Doing a body scan

Repeating a calming mantra (like “I am safe” or “I am enough”)

Let these small rituals signal a gentle beginning or a soft landing.

6. Use an app to keep it brainless

Let tech do the heavy lifting. Apps like Insight Timer, Headspace, and Calm offer meditations as short as 1 minute. You can even schedule reminders to pop up throughout your day.

Meditation doesn’t have to be a whole thing. You just have to start.

Bottom line: You DO have time to meditate. You just need the right hacks.

Try one (or two!) of these ideas this week and see how it shifts your day. Consistency beats length every time.

Want a simple way to remember these tips? Save this post—and follow for more mindfulness tools made for real life.

So, you’ve made the decision to start therapy – that’s a big step! But maybe you’re feeling a little nervous or unsure about what to expect during your telephone therapy appointment. Don’t worry, let me walk you through the entire process so you can feel more prepared and at ease.

First things first, you’ll want to schedule your appointment. This can be done by email, message or over the phone. Once you have your appointment set, it’s important to find a quiet and private space where you can talk openly and comfortably without any distractions.

When the time comes for your appointment, I will call you at the designated time. Make sure you have a reliable phone connection and that you’re in a comfortable position to talk. I will greet you and ask how you’re doing before diving into the session.

During the session, I will ask you questions to get to know you better and understand what you’re going through. I may also provide insights, tools, and strategies to help you navigate your thoughts and emotions. Remember, therapy is a collaborative process, so feel free to ask questions, share your concerns, and be open to feedback.

As the session comes to a close, I will summarise the key points discussed and check in with how you are feeling as the session comes to an end. I don’t provide any homework or tasks to do between sessions but I may suggest meditation techniques, or text/email information to you about things we have discussed if you feel it would be helpful.

After the call ends, take some time to reflect on the session and how you’re feeling. It’s normal to have mixed emotions after therapy, so be gentle with yourself and practice self-care. Remember, therapy is a journey, and it’s okay to take things one step at a time.

Overall, your telephone therapy appointment should feel like a safe and supportive space where you can explore your thoughts and feelings without judgment. Trust the process and be open to the healing journey ahead.

Being outdoors, particularly in the warmer months, is a great way to ground yourself during the working day. Especially when you are struggling to find the time to meditate or give yourself some much needed quiet time. So here are some tips to help keep your mind in a peaceful state during your working day.

1. Take regular breaks: Make it a priority to take short breaks throughout your work day. Use these breaks as an opportunity to step outside and get some fresh air. Even just a few minutes can make a big difference in how you feel.

2. Schedule outdoor meetings or phone calls: If possible, try to schedule meetings or phone calls that allow you to be outside. This could mean taking a walk while having a phone conversation, or holding a meeting in a nearby park or outdoor space.

3. Eat lunch outside: Instead of eating your lunch at your desk, find a nearby park or outdoor seating area where you can enjoy your meal outside. Not only will you get some fresh air, but a change of scenery can also help you recharge and refocus for the afternoon.

4. Opt for active transportation: Consider walking or biking to work if it’s feasible for you. Not only will you get some exercise, but you’ll also have an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors on your commute. If walking or biking isn’t an option, try getting off the bus or train a few stops early and walking the rest of the way.

5. Use your breaks for outdoor activities: Instead of spending your breaks scrolling through social media or browsing the internet, use that time to engage in outdoor activities. Go for a short walk, stretch, or do a quick workout outside to get your blood flowing and clear your mind.

6. Create an outdoor workspace: If you have the flexibility to work remotely, consider setting up a temporary workspace outside. This could be as simple as sitting on a bench in a nearby park or using a portable desk setup in your backyard. The change of environment can help increase your productivity and motivation.

7. Make outdoor activities part of your routine: Use your mornings or evenings to incorporate outdoor activities into your daily routine. Whether it’s going for a run, practicing yoga in the park, or taking your dog for a walk, establishing a regular outdoor activity can help you make it a priority.

Remember, getting outside during your work day is not only beneficial for your physical health but also for your mental well-being. So, make it a habit to prioritize spending time in nature every day.

So, you’ve finally taken the first step in seeking counselling but you don’t know what to expect for your first appointment. As you prepare for your first therapy session, you may have a lot of questions and uncertainties running through your mind. It’s completely normal to feel a bit nervous or unsure about what to expect during your first therapy appointment. To help ease your mind and provide some guidance, I’ve compiled a list of commonly asked questions that you may want to consider before your first session.

How does counselling work?
Counselling is a collaborative process between you and myself, where we work together to explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours in a safe and supportive environment. Through open and honest communication, I can help you gain insight into your challenges and make positive changes in your life.

What is my therapy approach or style?
Every counsellor has their own unique approach to therapy, so it’s important to find someone whose style aligns with your needs and preferences. Some therapists may use cognitive-behavioural techniques, while others may focus on psychodynamic or humanistic approaches. It’s okay to ask your therapist about their approach and how it may benefit you in your therapeutic journey. I follow a humanistic approach as a Person Centred Therapist and I have written a blog post here about my style, if you would like to know more.

Will you be able to talk openly and honestly?
Absolutely! Therapy is a judgment-free zone where you can feel comfortable expressing your thoughts and emotions without fear of criticism or shame. I am here to listen, support, and guide you through your challenges, so feel free to be open and honest about your feelings and experiences.

How will you involve me in decision-making regarding my treatment?
As a Person Centred Therapist, I will always make sure you are in a position of control over your sessions and any decision-making processes regarding your therapy and goals. Together, we can discuss any concerns or preferences you may have along the way. For example, we will have regular reviews where we can see if there are any areas you want to explore more.

What should you do if you feel therapy is not working for you?
If you feel that therapy is not meeting your needs or expectations, it’s important to communicate this. Open and honest communication is key in therapy, so please don’t hesitate to discuss your concerns with me or explore other treatment options that may be more beneficial for you.

Are there any important aspects of your history or current situation that you would like me to share in our first session?
During your first therapy session, I will ask you to provide some background information about your personal history, current challenges, and goals for counselling. This information will help me better understand your unique needs and tailor your therapy accordingly.

Overall, the most important thing to remember is that counselling is a collaborative and supportive process that can help you navigate life’s challenges and improve your overall well-being. By asking these commonly asked questions and engaging in open communication with your therapist, you can make the most out of your therapy experience and work towards positive change and growth. Good luck on your therapeutic journey!

1. Let’s talk meditation

Feeling stressed? Depressed? In need of some serious chill-out time? Well, you’ve come to the right place! Meditation has been my go-to when life gets tough, and honestly, it works wonders. Whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned meditator, I’ve got some easy tips to help you find your Zen and kick stress to the curb. So grab a cozy blanket, find a comfy spot, and let’s dive into the world of meditation. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

2. Why do I meditate?

Well, let me start by saying that the benefits of meditation are truly endless. For me, it’s all about finding inner peace and quieting the chaos that often consumes our minds. Life can get so hectic and overwhelming at times, and it’s easy to feel like you’re constantly being pulled in a million different directions. But when I take the time to meditate, I give myself a much-needed break from the noise and allow my mind to settle.

Meditation helps me to stay grounded and present in the moment. It allows me to let go of stress, worries, and negative thoughts, and instead focus on my breath and body. It’s like hitting the reset button for my mind, leaving me feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to take on whatever life throws my way.

But don’t just take my word for it. Give it a try yourself and see the transformative power of meditation. Check out my Facebook and Instagram page for tips on how to get started and make the most out of your meditation practice.

3. Finding a place to meditate

Now that you’re excited to give meditation a try, let’s talk about finding your space to do it. You see, finding the perfect location to meditate is key to creating a peaceful and calming environment.

Personally, I love meditating outdoors surrounded by nature. There’s just something about being in the fresh air, listening to the birds chirping and feeling the gentle breeze on my skin that helps me connect with my inner self. However, if that’s not your thing, don’t worry! It can be anywhere that makes you feel relaxed and comfortable.

It could be a cozy corner in your home, a quiet park, or even a dedicated meditation space you create for yourself. The important thing is to find a place where you can feel at ease and free from distractions. So, take a moment to think about where you feel most peaceful and make that your go-to meditation spot.

In the next section, I’ll be sharing with you some techniques that can help you ease into your meditation practice and make it a regular part of your routine. Stay tuned, and get ready to find your inner calm!

4. Get comfy and focus

Now that you’ve found your meditation spot, it’s time to get comfortable and get ready to dive into meditation. Trust me, this is where the magic really happens!

First things first, find a position that works best for you. Whether you choose to sit cross-legged on a cushion, lie down on a yoga mat, or even lean back in a comfy chair, the choice is yours. The goal here is to be in a position that allows your body to relax and be at ease.

Once you’re all set up, it’s time to focus your attention. One technique that really helps me is to start by taking a few deep breaths. Inhale slowly through your nose, feeling the air fill up your lungs, and then exhale gently through your mouth, releasing any tension or stress you might be holding onto. This simple act of focusing on your breath can really help calm your mind and bring you into the present moment.

If you find your thoughts wandering, don’t worry, it’s completely normal. Acknowledge those thoughts and gently bring your focus back to your breath. Don’t get frustrated with yourself – meditation is a practice, and like anything else, it takes time and patience.

Remember, there’s no right or wrong way to meditate. Experiment with different techniques and find what works best for you. The most important thing is to make it a regular part of your routine. Consistency is key in reaping the many benefits of meditation.

5. Breathe in, breathe out

One of the most important aspects of meditation is focusing on your breath. Taking deep breaths can do wonders for your mind and body. So, as you settle into your comfortable position, start by taking a deep inhale. Feel the air entering your nose, filling up your lungs, and then slowly exhale through your mouth, releasing any tension or stress.

Try to make your breaths slow and intentional, allowing them to be the anchor that keeps you rooted in the present moment. Pay attention to the sensation of the air entering and leaving your body, and let it be a reminder to let go of any thoughts or distractions that may arise.

If you’re feeling particularly restless or your mind is busy with thoughts, focus on the sound or rhythm of your breath. Let it guide you into a state of peace and calmness.

Remember, there’s no rush or pressure to achieve a specific outcome with your breath. Simply allow it to be your own personal rhythm. So take a moment, close your eyes, and take a few more deep breaths. Let the breath be your guide to inner calmness.

6. Embrace the distractions

You might be thinking, “wait, isn’t meditation about clearing the mind and getting rid of distractions?” Well, yes and no. While it’s true that the goal of meditation is to cultivate a sense of presence and stillness, it’s also important to acknowledge that distractions are a natural part of the process.

Instead of fighting against distractions or becoming frustrated when they arise, try embracing them with a sense of curiosity and non-judgment. Whether it’s a loud noise outside, an itch on your nose, or a wandering thought, see them as opportunities to practice redirecting your attention back to the present moment.

By acknowledging and accepting these distractions, you create a space of mindfulness and awareness. It’s like flexing a muscle – the more you practice redirecting your attention, the stronger your ability to stay focused becomes.

So next time your mind starts to drift, don’t beat yourself up. Embrace those distractions and use them as stepping stones toward a more peaceful and centered state of mind.

7. The power of consistency and patience

When it comes to meditation, consistency is key. Like any skill or practice, it takes time and patience to see tangible results. So often, we expect instant gratification and become discouraged when we don’t see immediate changes in our minds or lives.

But the truth is, meditation is a cumulative process. It’s the daily commitment to showing up and sitting with ourselves that allows us to reap the benefits. Just like going to the gym or learning a new language, progress takes time, effort, and dedication.

So, don’t get discouraged if you don’t experience a profound sense of peace or enlightenment after just one session. Instead, focus on the small wins and moments of stillness that you do have. Trust in the process and know that each time you sit down to meditate, you are nurturing your mind, body, and soul.

Remember, meditation is a journey, not a destination. It’s about cultivating a lifelong practice of self-exploration and self-care. So, be patient with yourself and continue to show up for yourself, even on the days when it feels challenging. The rewards will be well worth it.

8. Take it slow, and don’t stress too much

Now that you understand the importance of consistency in meditation, it’s time to take it slow and not stress too much. Remember, meditation should be a calming and relaxing practice, not another source of stress in our lives.

One common mistake many beginners make is putting too much pressure on themselves to “get it right” or achieve a certain level of proficiency quickly. But the truth is, there is no right or wrong way to meditate. It’s a personal journey, and everyone’s experience will be unique.

So, instead of worrying about doing it perfectly, focus on finding what works for you. Experiment with different techniques, such as guided meditations, mindfulness exercises, or simply sitting in silence. Allow yourself to explore and discover what resonates with you the most.

And remember, meditation is not about clearing your mind completely or stopping all thoughts. It’s about observing your thoughts without judgment and developing a sense of presence and awareness. So, give yourself permission to be imperfect and embrace the process.

In conclusion, let go of perfectionism and expectations. Embrace meditation as a tool for self-exploration and self-care. Nurture your mind, body, and soul with each meditation session. And most importantly, be kind and patient with yourself throughout this journey.

Keep practicing, be patient with yourself, and enjoy the process. With time, you’ll find that your meditation sessions become more productive and fulfilling. And don’t forget to enjoy the little moments of peace and stillness that come with each session.

We’ve talked about the importance of consistency and setting realistic expectations. We’ve also emphasized that meditation is a journey, not a destination.

Don’t stress about perfection or getting it right every single time. Just keep practicing and enjoy the process. Trust me, with time, you’ll see progress and you’ll feel more fulfilled during your meditation sessions.
